Founder of the Inayan System of Eskrima

Mangisursuro Michael G. Inay dedicated his life to the promotion, preservation, and global propagation of the Filipino Martial Arts. As the founder of the Inayan System of Eskrima, he developed and refined a comprehensive martial arts system rooted in seven distinct Eskrima styles, each with its own complete set of techniques and concepts for self-defense.
Early Training and Influence
Mangisursuro Inay studied privately under two legendary Eskrima Grandmasters, Angel Cabales and Max Sarmiento. His dedication to preserving these traditions led him to propose the formation of an organization to Grandmaster Cabales, which resulted in the creation of the first Cabales Serrada Eskrima Association.
Mangisursuro Inay contributed significantly by developing a ranking structure for Cabales Serrada Eskrima, introducing the following certifications:
- Basic Level Certificate
- Advanced Degree Certificate
- Master’s Degree Certificate
These certificates recognized proficiency and granted holders the authority to award ranks within the system. Grandmaster Cabales accepted and implemented these innovations, which became foundational for the association’s structure.
Founding the West Coast Eskrima Society
In 1979, Mangisursuro Inay co-founded the West Coast Eskrima Society alongside Grandmaster Max Sarmiento. The society was officially inaugurated at his home in Los Gatos, California. This groundbreaking organization united numerous prominent Filipino martial artists, including Max Sarmiento, Jimmy Tacosa, Jeffrey Elliott, Leo Giron, Dan Inosanto, and others, with the shared mission of preserving, propagating, and promoting Filipino Martial Arts.
Global Influence
Mangisursuro Inay was instrumental in the growth and acceptance of Filipino Martial Arts in the United States and Europe over three decades. He conducted seminars and clinics worldwide, teaching Inayan Eskrima in countries such as England, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Canada, and Australia.
In the United States, he became a respected figure in the law enforcement community, where he developed training programs including:
- Spontaneous Knife Defense: The first nationwide knife defense program for law enforcement, created for PPCT.
- Advanced knife techniques, riot baton courses, and training on pressure-sensitive nerve areas.
- The innovative use of knives as alternative weapons for executive protection in situations where firearms were unsuitable.
Inayan System of Eskrima
To minimize confusion and controversy surrounding the similarities in martial arts styles, Mangisursuro Inay named his system “Inayan.” He meticulously structured its seven styles into a cohesive learning framework with a ranking system, ensuring that each style remained self-sufficient and effective for self-defense.
